Home Remedies for Soap Scum

Take a look around your shower, bathtub, and sink and tell me what you see. Any white or gray filmy layer on the surface? If so, you’ve encountered the common complaint of soap scum (or limescale), which can attack many features of the bathroom. To keep a tidy appearance, you may want to learn about home remedies for soap scum.

When the minerals from tap water connect with soap and dirt, the result is often a layer of scaliness that covers well-used bathroom surfaces. You run the increased risk of soap scum when your tap water is hard and filled with minerals.

Since soap scum can develop on shower curtains, bathroom fixtures, bathtubs, shower doors, and tiles, it’s important to know how to combat and prevent the occurrence. Below you will find an array of home remedies for soap scum:

Remove soap scum from a shower door by wiping with a used dryer fabric softener sheet.

When your porcelain enamel sinks and tubs look less than desirable, remove soap scum by using a solution made with one tablespoon of ammonia per every gallon of hot water. Rinse off thoroughly after use. It is easier to apply by transferring the solution to a spray bottle and scrubbing with a sponge or bathroom tool. Wear gloves to avoid your skin coming in contact with the ammonia.

Add warm vinegar to a spray bottle and apply to soap scum. Allow to sit for about 30 minutes. Scrub with a brush or sponge. Rinse with clear water.

Mix one part dishwasher detergent and three parts water to create a spray solution that will attack soap scum. Spray on affected areas and leave on for 15 minutes. Use a sponge or scrub brush to remove. Rinse well with water.

Create a paste for soap scum by mixing baking soda and water together. Apply the remedy to walls and scrubs. Use water to rinse off.

The body spray has a reputation for repelling insects, but also works wonders as a cleanser against soap scum. Apply to affected areas and scrub away.

Treat your shower walls like a car window and whip out the squeegee. After every shower, wipe down the walls and doors with the squeegee to make sure the walls do not develop soap scum. This will also help prevent a buildup of mildew.

You can prevent the buildup of soap scum and mineral deposits by applying a car paste wax to the shower walls and doors.

The kind of soap that you use can affect the development of soap scum. Choose liquid gel soap instead over a solid bar of soap. This switch will prevent an accumulation of talc on the shower walls.

For a nice scent and a way to fight the build up of soap scum, wipe down the shower walls and doors with lemon oil.
